Logic & Computational Thinking

Identifying problems and proposing solutions is a necessary component in any walk of life, but what methods do we choose? In the West, from the ancient Greeks through to the High Middle Ages, the answer to this question was clear; the answer was Logic: “the science which directs the mind in the attainment of truth” (Coppens, 1891). The popularity of Formal Logic declined after the “Enlightenment” as more focus was placed on the study of human thought itself; however, during the 20th Century, a rebirth of logic came from an unsuspected group, namely mathematicians. These pioneering researchers rediscovered and reformulated the teachings of past centuries into symbols, eventually leading to the birth of the modern computer. Drawing from the great intellectual achievements of Western logicians, this course will introduce students to the discipline of Logic, its history, and its application to solving real-world problems, including the design of algorithms. In a series of 10 lessons, students will be introduced to a field not only testified by tradition, but also by education researchers.
