1.0 High School Government & Politics Credit | AP-Level | College-Prep
For AP Comparative Government and Politics we will study the political structures, policies, and political, economic, and social challenges of six selected countries: China, Iran, Mexico, Nigeria, Russia, and the United Kingdom. Examining how different governments solve similar problems, we will read and interpret a wide range of data, make comparisons between very different political systems, and develop arguments based on evidence drawn from a variety of sources. Given the fast-paced nature of political change, we will remain alert to political developments in these key countries throughout the course.
Using Comparative Government and Politics by John McCormick, Rod Hague & Martin
Harrop and other material, we will study the following units:
Unit 1: Political Systems, Regimes, and Governments
Unit 2: Political Institutions
Unit 3: Political Culture and Participation
Unit 4: Party and Electoral Systems and Citizen Organizations
Unit 5: Political and Economic Changes and Development
You are not expected to be an expert in the politics of the six selected countries before you start the course but should be prepared to read widely, think deeply, and examine a range of different media sources outside lessons to help you develop a thorough understanding of the political world in which we all live.
The AP Comparative Government and Politics exam is 2 hours and 30 minutes long and
includes 55 multiple-choice questions and 4 free-response questions.
This course is approved by the College Board.

Kai really enjoyed the lively debates and the fact that there was always something new to discuss in each session. He looked forward to the interactive format, the chance to share his opinions and hear different viewpoints in a truly open environment. Since starting this class, Kai has grown in confidence when articulating his own arguments and evaluating other perspectives. His ability to analyse political systems and compare them has sharpened noticeably. He is more engaged and now approaches source material and data in a much more thoughtful way. This course is ideal for teens who enjoy debate, critical thinking and big ideas. It offers a brilliant balance of academic rigour and lively discussion. If your child wants to engage with politics, global issues, and develop their own voice, then this class is a fantastic choice.

AP Comparative Government with Mr Biffert is excellent—clear, engaging, and genuinely enjoyable. We studied political systems and institutions across different countries, comparing how governments work in practice and how power, democracy, and policy play out around the world. The in class discussions and student presentations are really good.

The course curriculum was well-constructed for the most part. The books used were helpful for finding deep analyses of the course countries, and our teacher asked throughout the year that we summarise certain sections of our text on the countries for the class, which helped to imprint the information more firmly. The AP website videos and quizzes were very useful for revising course concepts and putting them into practice with the aforementioned knowledge of the countries themselves.
Mr. Biffert is a very engaging teacher and helped to explain some of the course concepts well. His grading seems very much based on the strict criteria of the exam, which is helpful, as it gives a good idea of how work will be graded on the day. His knowledge of political systems covered the course countries well, but also extended beyond them. He would always engage us students when there was time, often bringing up a topic for discussion with the class, or having one person summarise a text reading on a course country at the beginning of class. Besides this, he always seemed personally interested in the students, and often would ask about them at the beginning of class, or share a personal anecdote. Very helpful, friendly, and would recommend.

It was my favourite subject to study, I’ve been so engaged throughout the whole year. I love the way you teach and how you kept the class engaged, I have very much appreciated you being my tutor.
