Course Overview

The course will focus on the cultural and religious factors that both shaped and were influenced by the process of state formation in the early modern period (1200-1750), how that then influenced the influenced the way in which kingdoms and later states related to each other on the global stage. The 1800 were key to establishing a new world order that would set the stage for the 20th century. For this period we will focus on the international meetings as precursors to the international organisations as well as the political ideas of nationalism and race that were key instigators of the two world wars. The interwar period as well as the post WWII periods will be focused on the intellectual and spiritual soul searching caused by the wars and that aided in creating a different vision of the person and society. We will end looking at the cold war and the post-cold war period that has evolved into the war on terror and our current international situation.
