AP Pre Calculus

About Instructor

Course Overview

In AP Precalculus, we will explore everyday situations using mathematical tools and lenses. We will build upon existing mathematical understanding to build deep mastery of modelling and functions, and examine scenarios through multiple representations. AP Precalculus prepares students for other higher-level mathematics and science courses.

The course consists of developing three common practices across three units of work. These practices are Procedural and Symbolic Fluency, Multiple Representations and Communication and Reasoning. This covers solving equations represented analytically with and without technology; constructing equivalent algebraic, numerical and graphical representations of a function; describing the characteristics of a function; applying numerical results to a real world context and more.

The three units of work are:

  • Polynomial and Rational Functions
  • Exponential and Logarithmic Functions
  • Trigonometric and Polar Functions

The exam itself is three hours long, split into four parts, which consists of fifty multiple-choice questions as well as four free-response questions. The four parts consist of two calculator and two non-calculator papers.

In addition to the weekly class, students should expect to spend 60 to 90 minutes per day studying, completing assignments, and preparing for class.

Course Prerequisites

Students wishing to complete AP Precalculus must have completed Algebra 2 and Geometry or Integrated Maths 3.

Students will also need a TI-83 or 84 or equivalent AP approved calculator for use throughout the course and the exam.

This AP is approved by the College Board.
