This advanced music theory course is designed for students eager to delve deeper into their understanding of music theory. It provides a comprehensive foundation, preparing students for AP Music Theory and setting them on a path toward achieving the UK ABRSM grade 8 qualification.
AP Music Theory serves as an entry-level college course, focusing on the analysis of both performed and notated music. Students will explore fundamental concepts such as pitch, rhythm, form, and musical structure. Access to extensive resources from the College Board, including videos and a variety of question types, will enrich the learning experience.
The course is structured into eight units:
Music Fundamentals I: Covering Pitch, Major Scales and Key Signatures, Rhythm, Meter, and Expressive Elements.
Music Fundamentals II: Exploring Minor Scales and Key Signatures, Melody, Timbre, and Texture.
Music Fundamentals III: Delving into Triads and Seventh Chords. Harmony and Voice Leading I: Understanding Chord Function, Cadence, and Phrase.
Harmony and Voice Leading II: Analyzing Chord Progressions and Predominant Function.
Harmony and Voice Leading III: Studying Embellishments, Motives, and Melodic Devices.
Harmony and Voice Leading IV: Exploring Secondary Function.
Modes and Form: Investigating Modes and Musical Form.
Through these units, students will develop a solid grasp of advanced music theory principles, equipping them for further academic pursuits and practical application in their musical endeavors.

The course covers the concepts of theory in enough depth to give a fundamental understanding that will help one’s appreciation as well as performance of music. Dr. Lubbock has found a very good and consistent format for classes which makes us students engage and helps to reinforce the subjects being taught. His musical knowledge and ability to demonstrate musical principles physically on the spur of the moment are excellent, and his use of references to culturally-recognised music helps to reinforce one’s memory. Besides this, he has an engaging personality, and his attitude makes us less worried about making mistakes and more inclined to engage in the class.
