Want to understand how the economy works as a whole? Why do recessions occur? What causes inflation? Why do governments run deficits, and what role do central banks play in managing the economy? How do international trade and exchange rates affect everyday life? If you are curious about these big-picture economic questions, this course is for you.
In AP Macroeconomics, students study how national and global economies function. You will learn how economic output is measured, what drives economic growth, and how unemployment and inflation arise. The course examines the tools governments and central banks use—fiscal policy and monetary policy—to influence economic performance, as well as the benefits and trade-offs of international trade and globalization.
Students will learn to analyse economic data, interpret graphs and models, evaluate policy decisions, and apply economic reasoning to real-world issues. Throughout the course, we will discuss economic outcomes in terms of both efficiency and equity, and consider the appropriate role of government in stabilizing and guiding the economy. Whether you are interested in economics, business, politics, or international relations, this course provides a strong foundation for understanding the modern world.
Course Workload
The primary goal of this course is preparation for the AP Macroeconomics exam. We will pursue a rigorous course of study using college-level materials. The resources on AP Classroom will be supplemented with outside readings, Khan Academy videos, and interactive activities. A significant portion of the course will involve assignments drawn from previous AP Macroeconomics exams.
Students should expect to spend approximately 60–90 minutes per day on this course.
This course covers all material required for the AP® Macroeconomics exam, presented through a combination of intuitive explanations, real-world applications, and graphical and mathematical analysis. By the end of the course, students will not only be well prepared for the AP exam but will also have a practical understanding of how macroeconomic forces shape the world around them.
Who Should Apply?
Homeschooled students in grades 10–12 are welcome to apply. In exceptional circumstances, a motivated grade 9 student may be considered. Because economics emphasizes analytical reasoning and graph-based analysis, students who are comfortable with mathematics will be at an advantage. Algebra 1 or GCSE Maths should be completed or taken concurrently.
