AP Biology

About Instructor

Course Overview

The course will closely follow the College Board’s AP Biology preparation framework, details of which can be found through the AP Central website (https://apcentral.collegeboard.org/courses/ap-biology) and use many of its AP Classroom online resources and tools, including free formative assessments throughout the year to measure progress.  The exam itself is a 3-hour exam that includes 60 multiple-choice questions and 6 free-response questions.  The focus is not on memorised material but on the analysis, interpretation, and evaluation of experimental results, and the well-written explanations of important biological concepts and content they support.

Course Workload

In addition to the weekly class, students should expect to spend 60 to 90 minutes per day studying, completing assignments, and preparing for class.

Course Skills and Prerequisites:

This is an introductory college-level biology course, so students should have previously completed high school courses in General Biology and General Chemistry.  There are many General Biology and General Chemistry courses available online.  If a student feels unsure about their present level of biology or chemistry, please feel free to contact me via email, amanda.devial@gmail.com, to discuss the matter. The AP Biology course is organised into 8 units covering material commonly taught in advanced Biology texts (Biochemistry, Cell Structure and Function, Cellular Energetics, Cell Communication and Cell Cycle, Heredity, Gene Expression and Regulation, Natural Selection, and Ecology).  I will be using Campbell Biology, an American text, and would recommend purchasing an AP Biology review guide such as Barron’s AP Biology Premium by Deborah T Goldberg, MS.

This AP is approved by the College Board.
